The mud is gone — or at least improving — and now the question at Parx is whether speed takes control again.

Today’s nine-race card is loaded with routes, including six races at a mile or longer. Five of those races use the 1 Mile 70 Yards Early Speed profile, where the rail gets a bonus but the rest of the post positions play mostly fair.

That makes today’s upgraded racing surface particularly interesting. Closers performed better than usual in yesterday’s mud. If the drying track shifts Parx back toward its more familiar speed-friendly tendencies, horses capable of getting forward could have a very different afternoon.

Where Terry and Rich Agree

There’s substantial agreement today, especially in the route races.

Race 1 is a good example of the difference between the two approaches. Terry’s longshot Ruby Ruby becomes Rich’s top choice, with a TLRSP# +4, Top PAR+, the biggest class drop and the most upside. Both also use Dakota Cam and Onmywaytosavthday.

Race 2 is almost a complete match. Terry ranks Hey Porter, Great Escape and Chelonian 1-2-3. Rich has the exact same three horses in the exact same order, while Terry’s longshot Admiral’s Wave is Rich’s fourth choice.

Race 3 brings another strong crossover. Terry’s top two Vino Gray and Good Sal are Rich’s top two in reverse order. Terry’s longshot Carcharoth is third for Rich.

Then comes one of the largest statistical edges on the card.

Race 4 – Literary

Terry puts #1 Literary on top.

So does Rich.

And the Smart Sheets numbers aren’t subtle:

Both also have Sister Supream, Tomarie and Obstinate involved.

Race 5 is another near-complete convergence. Warrior Wayne, Fromanothamutha, Vance Scholars and Atrocious all appear prominently between the two sets of rankings.

Terry’s Bloody Colors Wave and Problematica become Rich’s top two in Race 6, just reversed. Both also use Solemn Oath.

Race 7 may be even more interesting because Terry’s top three — Tongue Tied, Frankie Coffeecake and Mor Cheese Please — are also Rich’s top three, again in a different order.

Then comes Terry’s Best Bet.

Terry makes #7 Tims his Best Bet of the Day.

Rich ranks Tims second and gives him the biggest in-race Late Speed edge at +8, along with better EP/Fractions.

But Rich puts Terry’s longshot #2 Quetzal Island on top, backed by a class drop and Top Total Pace +6.

That could make the 2-7 combination especially interesting.

The finale produces another remarkable level of agreement. Terry’s top three are Blame Eve, Spastic Bid and Ranting and Raving.

Does Speed Take Over Again?

Yesterday’s muddy Parx card gave closers more opportunities than we normally see.

Today brings a different puzzle.

The track has been upgraded, six of the nine races are routes, and the profile for five of those route races favors Early Speed.

That doesn’t mean blindly betting whichever horse gets to the front.

But it does make horses like Astrid, Great Escape, Carcharoth, Sister Supream, Warrior Wayne, Mor Cheese Please and Blame Eve particularly interesting as we watch the first few races and figure out whether the drying surface is shifting the advantage forward again.

If speed starts holding early, we’ll have an important piece of information for the rest of a route-heavy card.

Terry brings the traditional handicapping.

Rich brings the Smart Sheets.

Parx brings a drying track and a lot of two-turn racing.

Maybe speed rules the day again.
