Q- Tim G asked, “When you handicap the races, what do you look for?”
A– Well Tim a lot of things…. like is the horse dropping in class? I believe this is a huge when it comes to picking winners. Have they run at this distance before? How many days has it been since their last race? Are they a speed horse, a closer or a pace horse? How fast can they go either on the front or coming from the back? Trainer and rider does matter but everything above comes first. Workouts don’t mean much to me as long as they are consistent. And remember on workouts it’s how they do it not how fast.
Q- Kyle N asked. “Is it hard to claim a horse and what do you look for?”
A– Kyle it’s not hard but you need to have things in place. First your license as an owner. Then, the most important thing, a trainer. Plus, the trainer will have some insights horses to claim. I look for a horse that has some conditions left which means levels of races from non-winner conditions to state conditions.
I love horses with speed and hopefully speed to take a distance of ground. A horse that has heart which is most likely the hardest thing to find. Nowadays, you must look at videos as they tell all. I wouldn’t claim a horse older than 6 years old. And I wouldn’t claim a horse that’s dropping two class levels or more…. we trainers call that a fire sale.
