Saturday, July 27, Saratoga Race Course, Race 4, 2:45 p.m. ET

#1 Shoplifted: This is a chalkier play than we’d normally go with in this post, but this seems like a very logical single in the early Pick 5 sequence, so we may as well hop on it. No one has been hotter over the past few weeks at Saratoga in these kinds of races than trainer Steve Asmussen. Shoplifted shows a nice series of works coming in, highlighted by a best-of-38 work on July 14. This horse has the pedigree to win early and checks off all the boxes as an $800,000 purchase at the sales earlier this year. Shoplifted should run very big on debut with Asmussen’s first-call rider Ricardo Santana aboard. Note that the other half of the entry, #1A Soviet, is well-bred and has every right to run huge here too.

Saturday, July 27, Saratoga Race Course, Race 6, 3:56 p.m. ET

#7 Sweet Meadow Mist: This filly won first out by six lengths. The horse who ran second in that race came back to win in her next start. Sweet Meadow Mist also won easily in her next race. She might get overlooked on the basis of a poor effort last out, but that was over the turf. She gets back to the dirt here in a nice restricted state-bred allowance, which should be well within her reach. Trainer Charlie Baker always has his horses ready to fire early in the Saratoga meet and he’s won a few so far this year. Joel Rosario gets the mount and he’s won with over 20% of starters for Baker.
