Have you considered collecting horse racing relate stock certificates? Many current and closed racetracks had to raise money and sold stock. You can own the worthless paper.
I found some interesting racetracks available (and there are plenty of others available):
- Monmouth Park
- Roosevelt Raceway
- San Juan Racing
- Narragansett
- Belmont Park
Some of the certificates that I found have an interesting past. The M.W. Savage Factories and the Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester, and Dubuque Electric Traction Company, for example, the owner was Marion Willis Savage. He owned Dan Patch.
August Belmont is a little easier for us horse racing people because he is one of the founding members of Belmont Park, but he is also in partnership with other New York City area tracks. He helped close them down too. I found a stock certificate he signed for sale related to Belmont Park.
There are also obscure ones, like the North Hudson Driving Park Association, an owner of a track in 1885. Another one is the Pari-Mutuel Equipment Corporation which made betting equipment in the 1960s. Finally, stock for the New England Breeder’s Club, which was an illegal operation in 1905.
You make want some sports related; plenty of those are available, and maybe a scam or two stocks for a good laugh.
One seller is Ghost of Wall Street, who adds historical context to the stock. Check them out at: https://ghostsofwallstreet.com/
Do you have an old favorite track or a current to hang on the wall? Some stock certificates come in different colors to match your office colors or something like that.
