22 to 1 Tom’s Sha Tin Tips and Comments

RACE 5

6 – Shamus Storm

His first career start was a reasonable effort. He ran second but was no match for the winner. He raced three and four wide and held off the rest of the field. He gets a much better post-position and should be hard to beat off the first effort.

7 – Noble Fans

Another horse with his first career run and did ok. He settled midpack and two wide, moved between horses, but it wasn’t enough to finish better than third. The jockey asked the horse to pick it up on the ride, and he had a mild rally. He has a chance to do better this time.

8 – Smiling Collector

He settled off the pace last time, which he hasn’t done in previous races. He had a chance but didn’t pick it up enough for a strong finish. This race was at 1600m, and now he returns to 1400m, which will help his chances.

RACE 6

1 – Ka Ying Rising

Again, he will be the short-priced favorite and has been in nine of these eleven races; he ran second in the other two races. He ran his race last time with a good beginning and power forward at the end. He again draws the outside post, which hasn’t bothered him in the past—a fast pace to run at again.

3 – Helios Express

He ran second out to the top choice last time with some issues during the race. He will make one run from the back, and the pace will be plenty for him to run past the rest of the field, but can he catch the top choice if he gets the first run? I doubt it.

8 – Magic Control

He has run some distant races behind some ok horses. He lost last time by a head. These later races were at 1000m; today, let’s see how he handles the distance and turn. Watch the betting on this one.

RACE 7

9 – Light Years Charm

In his two starts in Hong Kong, he’s not had much racing luck. In his first race, he was slow at the start, blocked, and then came on. In his second start, he was bumped initially, raced wide, and made good progress late. The key for me is the jockey change.

3 – Prestige Always

He was keen early while wide and had chances, but he finished seventh. He returns to 1400m after two races at 1600m. He has one win and two seconds at this distance. Return to form today.

1 – Superb Boy

After facing better horses without success, this is his second race at this level. In the last race, he showed speed but dropped back at the end. Top weight doesn’t help, but a good trip with a new jockey may do the trick for better results.

RACE 8

1 – Voyage Bubble

He is the now horse. He comes into the race from a group one win against locals and foreign invaders and does it effortlessly. He’s a stalker and will have at least one horse to run at in Beauty Eternal. I don’t see them getting away with soft fractions. Based on his current form, he’s the best miler in Hong Kong.

3 – Beauty Eternal

The speed of this race means he could share the lead with California Spangle or cut the mile himself. Last time, he had a challenging post position to come over and get the lead, and he still must work from post eight. A slow pace and some rain may help.

8 – Patch of Theta

The class riser here has been running against good horses but not at the group one level. His record is brilliant: 14 starts, six wins, four seconds, and four thirds. He’s won at this distance in a good time. He will have plenty to run at; it’s just a matter of whether he is good enough.

RACE 9

4 – Bundle Award

He showed life in his last start, his second in Hong Kong. He had a good start, but he had some issues finding room to run and made good progress at the end. That’s enough for me to say that he’s the winner today. His record is six starts and three wins.

13 – Midori Fuji

Although he showed some pace in his two starts, the comments suggest he has been a bit “green.” His last race was much better than the first race, but he was behind a slow pace. The drop in distance will help if he shows the same early pace as before.

3 – Sky Trust

If you “toss” his last race, where he went to the lead and backed up with under 100m to go to run seventh. His races before having been in a stalking position and much better results. Change of jockey to one that has won on him before. Post position is a challenge.

Rich’s Sha Tin Ranks and Analysis

Race 5: Seasons Bloom Handicap

4 – MR ENERGIA – Zac Purton and numbers say he will be flying late

3 – GALVANIC – 1 of 3 class droppers and the final quarter numbers look like first q numbers for some sprints

10 – GOLDENTRONICMIGHTY – excuses in last three races – going to relish extra distance

6- SHAMUS STORM – second race improvement could be enough

Race 6: Centenary Sprint Cup

1 – KA YING RISING – most obvious in this race – winner 6 in a row – Tr/Distance 11/9-2-0

8 – MAGIC CONTROL – going a little longer today with blistering final quarter times

3 – HELIOS EXPRESS – likes good to firm footing – ITM 8 of last 9

7 – BEAUTY WAVES – another that is at his best on good-firm footing and should better pace last out

Race 7: Sound Print Handicap

2 – GRACIOUS EXPRESS – clean trip is all that’s needed

9 – LIGHT YEARS CHARM – Zac Purton again – excuses in both – despite that final times meet par

4 – WINNING GOLD – effCective at the track and distance

12 – PATCH OF COSMO – another that always seems to find trouble – extra distance here helps

Race 8: Stewards’ Cup

5 – GALAXY PATCH – loves the footing and the final quarter numbers are fast

6 – CHANHENG GLORY – winner 6/12 at the track/distance

2 – CALIFORNIA SPANGLE – definitely has the class – just wonder if he is maxing out on distance?

3 – BEAUTY ETERNAL – Zac Purton and his final times are very close to PAR

Race 9: Mr Vitality Handicap

7 – SOLID IMPACT – could find the extra distance to his liking

3 – SKY TRUST – has more than 1 race on the recent resume that likely wins

14 – KA YING SUPURB – cutting back in distance might be the answer here

9 – ROMANTIC SON – when all else is a coin toss -take the top jockey Zac Purton
