Horse Racing Picks and Analysis

Tom and Rich lit up the Glorious Goodwood last week. They’ll try to keep the saw sharp this week at the Curragh Racetrack. They also have some thoughts on a pair of Saratoga Races with international flavor.

The Curragh Horse Racing Picks

– Saturday

3:15p – Race 4

Rathasker Stud Phoenix Sprint G3

7 – Castle Star – Draw 3

First start of the season on group 2 at the Curragh ran 5th, made progress in the race but didn’t finish, classic needed start.

Face good 2yrs last season in group 1,

3 – Power Under Me – Draw 7

10 starts 3 wins 2 seconds 2 thirds

Ran 3rd in listed race at the curragh last out, made the lead at 2F but didn’t hold on and out finished for 2nd by 1L

No chance in group 2 vs Brad the Brief losing by 8 3/4L

Won first start of the season at Cork in listed race

Win? No, he’s only been able to place in group races and I think that finishing up in a exacta or trifecta is the best he can do

2 – Go Bears Go

11 Starts 3 wins 3 seconds 2 thirds

Better effort last out in group 3 at Newbury he got up in time for second

Royal Ascot race he was up front and faded

Won first start of season at Ascot

Won at the Curragh as a 2yr

Will be up front just needs to finish stronger

3:45p – Race 5

Sheehy Motors Volkswagen Handicap

4 – Plunkett – Draw 5

20 starts 2 wins 3 seconds 3 thirds

Went off the favorite in last and did nothing until 1F left but it was too late

Won previous start at 7F by 2 1/2 L running the best race of his career

He’s done well all year except for last race

Toss last and should rebound here

7 – In Ecstasy – Draw 3

4 starts 2 wins

Only won on the AW at this distance

Ran 4th in March and then another layoff until this race

Trained by Joseph O’Brien so correctly placed

Trains on turf they see something good

6 – Janoobi – Draw 4

Finally won maiden last out after 2 seconds in previous starts

Time wasn’t fast but he drew away from the field

Colin Keene stays on so must like he’s chances

4:15p – Race 6

Keeneland Phoenix Stakes G1

3 – Bradsell – Draw6

2 for 2

Win last was brilliant run at Royal Ascot in group 2, when asked for more, he responded and appeared to be giving more at the end

This has turned into a key race with the 2 runners up winning in group company next time out

Favorite but there is competition

5 – Persian Force – Draw 3

4 starts 3 wins 1 second

Lost to my top horse at Royal Ascot and next, won in group 2 as big favorite

Will be running strong at the end again

4 – Little Big Bear – Draw 2

4 starts 3 wins 1 second

Win last race at the Curragh last out group 3 by 4 3/4L as big favorite

Won at Royal Ascot in listed by a neck

Has 2 runs at the Curragh

Ryan Moore will place the horse to beat top 2

Saratoga Horse Racing Picks
– Saturday

Caesars Saratoga Derby Invitational G1

4 – Nations Pride

Couldn’t catch Classic Causeway in time last out

Ran excellent races up until the Epsom Derby but shipped and ran well at BEL

Shorter distance may help and William Buick is in to ride

6 – Annapolis

Won last at BEL going 1 mile with a top speed number moved at the top of the stretch and won going away

First start at Penn National he was not as sharp running 2nd as big favorite

Good pace up front only improves the chances here

10 – Stone Age

Good last out run with Nations Pride & Classic Causeway but to late

Epsom Derby was not great but his first 2 races of the season were winning efforts

New jockey in John Velazquez because Ryan Moore is busy at the Curragh

– Sunday

Saratoga Oaks Invitational G3

4 – Walkathon

Since moving to the grass, she’s undefeated including a grade 3 win at CD over McKulick

She blew past her and held off the challenge late

Two excellent prep works going into this race :59.3b :59.3b

Longest race so far but bred to handle it

2 – McKulick

Big win last out over some of these horse

Sat back, moved wide and won, first to move was the winning move

Until that race, she was only a maiden winner but placed in all her other races

Wants distance and bred for it

3 – With The Moonlight

Tracked leader, moved to the lead early and got caught and passed. Not her day, ran 2nd

Only a handicap winner in England with win in class 5 and allowance races, only the grade 1 placing last out

William Buick returns to ride
