22 to 1 Tom’s Tips and Analysis
ASCOT
Race 1 – Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Handicap Cl3 (4yo+ 0-90) 1m4f
8 – Great Bedwyn – Draw 13
Won his last start before layoff after coming from the back of the field. The was at the class 4 level and first time at twelve furlongs. The trainer has a good record first up. The outside draw is a concern.
6 – Maso Bastie – Draw 9
He placed first-up last year and then won the next start. He runs first again, but he has only two starts on the turf and won one race. He didn’t have a bad race last out but not getting to the leaders, switch to turf help.
7 – Appier – Draw 8
He hasn’t run well in his last two races, a nothing effort two races back at Epsom and then and equally off effort on the all-weather in his last race. Time off, which he needed, takes the weight off with five pounds off using an apprentice and first up let’s see what he can do.
Race 2 – Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% British EBF Fillies’ Handicap Cl2 (3yo+ 0-100) 1m
6 – Strong Impact – Draw 1
In his first start of the season, he showed pace and retreated a bit at the end of the race to run fourth. This is a step up, but the foundation of a race is a cut back in distance, which should help him run well here. His record on the turf is four starts, one win, and three seconds.
1 – Mystic Pearl – Draw 7
He returned from Dubai after two average races and ran on the all-weather at six furlongs, finishing sixth. He raced in the back of the field, had to be steadied, and then held position. He has done well at this distance and appears to be well placed for a good effort.
10 – Flying Finn – Draw 8
An in-form horse, he won his last two races at the class 5 level on the turf at six furlongs. This may be too aggressive placing and adding distance, but he’s been winning at decent margins.
Race 3 – Lavazza & Ascot 10 Year Anniversary Victoria Cup (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (4yo+) 7f
4 – Streets of Gold – Draw 23
In his last race, he raced towards the rear and was never a factor. This is his first race of the season, and he has raced well at this distance and level, but he only has one win at this distance. He faced better last time, and this is a better opportunity. The draw could be an issue.
18 – Hickory – Draw 6
Went off the joint favorite last time out and ran second on the all-weather in a class 3 at this distance. His final race of last season was not much at Ascot, but overall, he’s done pretty well at Ascot. This is his distance, and he should make a good account of himself in this race.
1 – Popmaster – Draw 17
His first start was in class 1 at Newmarket at six furlongs, and he was on the pace but didn’t finish running sixth. He’s done well at seven furlongs but has seven second place runs in his 29 starts on the turf. The trainer elected to take so much weight off by using a five-pound apprentice in this race.
Race 4 – 5f Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Novice Stakes (GBB Race) (Class 3) (2yo)
4 – Hallanson
6 – Original Outlaw
5 – Monomyth
Race 5 – Carey Group Handicap Cl3 (3yo 0-88) 1m2f
2 – Global Skies – Draw 6
In his season debut, he ran third of the soft going at Beverley at seven furlongs. It was an eventful race, with having to be steadied and switched over. He’s done well overall in lower-level races, and with a race in hand, he will like the distance and improve again.
4 – Midair – Draw 3
He comes into this race without a win and lost by a neck in his seasonal debut at Epsom. It’s not like he hasn’t been trying, losing by one length, head and neck. This son of Frankel may break his maiden today.
5 – Sindoriyno – Draw 7
He’s run twice, both on the all-weather, with the first race in January being a winning effort but not without issues. He won by a head going nine furlongs. Return to the races in April at the same distance and again had issues at the start and ran fourth. Switching to the turf may make a distance.
Race 6 – Mariner Systems Fillies’ Handicap Cl4 (3yo+ 0-85) 1m2f
10 – Unreal Connection – Draw 2
Ran third in her return running midpack and really didn’t move forward. For me, she needed the race. She only won once and that was at Epsom on the good going at seven furlongs. I think she will be discounted a bit in the betting and will be in front at the end.
4 – Ciara Pearl – Draw 3
She has been on all-weather and the turf with good to excellent results. She ran strongly at Bath, winning. She has been going well, with three wins in her last three races. She moves up in class, but she’s been in excellent form, and she’s never been out of the money.
6 – Warda Jamila – Draw 6
With only three starts, she won her final, and the novices ran as the favorite. She tracked the leaders in her last race and first start of the season and ran on for sixth. This was a class 2 race, so a bit of a drop may make the difference.
Race 7 – Peroni Nastro Azzurro 0.0% Blue Ribbon Handicap Cl4 (4yo+ 0-80) 6f
7 – Brave Nation – Draw 25
The first run of the season was at Ascot at five furlongs, and ran on for third with some issues early in the race. He finished the season at Ascot in a class 2 race running fourth. He’s run ten times and only has one win, but I like the last race and may surprise here.
23 – Habooba – Draw 16
Ran on the all-weather all of her career with only one win from twelve starts but has finished in the money six times. She been running well, and this is her first start on the turf. By the KY Derby winner Nyquist, the offspring have shown a liking for the turf, and why not give this a whirl at a price?
18 – Alcazan – Draw 24
Returned to the races with a third at Windsor at six furlongs doing most of the running. He will be a front running again and if the going is good to firm as I think is will be on the far-side, he may be hard to beat.
PARISLONGCHAMP
2:50 – 8:50 am Eastern Daylight Time
Emirates Poule d’Essai des Pouliches (Group 1) (3yo Fillies) (Grande Course) (Turf) (3yo) 1m
15 – Louis Procter
She is undefeated and running at this distance for the first time, but she won her last race by three lengths on the all-weather at Chantilly. She steps up in class, but the trainer knows how to prepare horses for the classics, and she appears to be ready to step forward.
8 – Romantic Style
After nothing in her first race at Newbury in her first start, she has three wins at six and seven furlongs, including a Group 3 at Deauville. Yet another Charlie Appleby runner who is ready for a top effort going this distance.
2 – Vespertillo
She comes over from Ireland with only one win but has a place in all her other races, including a second to Fallen Angel in a group one at the Curragh. Interesting race for her first start but she must be going well at home send her here.
3:30 – 9:30 am Eastern Daylight Time
Emirates Poule d’Essai des Poulains (Group 1) (3yo Colts) (Grande Course) (Turf) (3yo) 1m SKY
5 – Ramadan
He’s won his last two races in listed and group three company as the favorite on the very soft. He’s undefeated at the distance. For me, he’s the favorite and ready again for a strong effort.
6 – Metropolitan
Return to the races in the same race as my top choice and basically ran around the track for a dull first effort. I think I may have been a little short on fitness, and this was an opportunity to get a race in him. Why? Because he won his first two starts at this distance. He will run better today because this was the target.
10 – Henry Longfellow
After the disappointing run by City of Troy last weekend, it makes me think the second stringer may be up for a good effort or also a big flop. He’s undefeated and won by five lengths on the good to yielding at the Curragh. If ready, he’s a strong contender.
