Epsom Downs Horse Racing Picks

22 to 1 Tom’s Tips

RACE 1

Lester Piggott Handicap Cl2 (3yo 0-100) 1m2f

9 – Cool Legend – Draw 5

2 – Persica – Draw 11

5 – Whiskey Pete – Draw 8

RACE 2

Princess Elizabeth Stakes (Sponsored By My Pension Expert) (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m½f

8 – Chic Colombine – Draw 3

Toss last race, bad draw, and the ground was too fast for her. She won her first start in a listed race at St Cloud on the heavy going in March. She won three in a row last season mainly on the soft going.

4 – Royal Dress – Draw 6

Her first season start was a winning effort at Goodwood for her new owners. She can from last to win at 33-1. This horse puts her best effort into the soft to heavy going. Off the last effort, this race suits.

5 – Running Lion – Draw 4

Her first start of the season was in a group 2 at Newmarket and went off the favorite. She’s won on the softer going but she hasn’t won since May of last year. Off the last race, she could improve or reserve form but I can’t leave her off my ticket.

RACE 3

Betfred Diomed Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m½f

1 – Highland Avenue – Draw 1

He returns to racing after four runs in Dubai and drops down in distance. Last year, he came off a layoff to win a group 3 at Newmarket. This distance suits and will put forward a good run.

8 – Silver Sword – Draw 4

He returned to the races with a fourth at Haydock at seven furlongs on the good to firm going. It was a good enough race for return, and I was a bit keen early. This was a useful race to prepare for this race.

4 – Regal Reality – Draw 8

He’s 9yo and likes to show up for a placing in races. He did it in at Chester last out far behind the winner to run third. His first start of the season was a good fourth in a group 3 at Newmarket. He will show up again.

RACE 4

Betfred 3YO “Dash” Handicap Cl3 (3yo 0-90) 5f

17 – Knicks – Draw 2

Won by a neck last out at Chester at five furlongs after running second in his first season start at six furlongs. He ran on the good going before he ran on the heavy going in form and, for me, the one to beat.

12 – The Coffee Pod – Draw 7

He’s only won one race, and his form is off and on, but today, at this distance, I think this is more to his liking. He’s placed twice on the softer going and was too keen in his last race. Better today.

8 – Mashadi – Draw 8

Just missed last out Ascot by a neck at six furlongs. From his nine runs, he never won but ran second five times, and he lost by neck or head in some of those races. He a good candidate to finish in the money again.

RACE 5

Aston Martin “Dash” Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 5f

5 – The Bell Conductor – Draw 5

After a win in the race before, he received a 5lbs weight penalty for the win and couldn’t handle the final furlong. He is better on the all-weather but with a win and fourth in his last two starts on the turf. This is his distance with a record of 22 starts, seven wins, and three placings. The apprentice rider returns for this run, and the weight comes off.

7 – Looking For Lynda – Draw 1

He had good runs in his last three races, running second twice and third. He may prefer the good going but has often placed on the soft going. The inside draw means he will be pushed forward and get a placing at the end.

2 – Democracy Dilemma – Draw 8

He’s running twice in May, winning by a neck and losing by a head. He’s won on all types of going. He’s also done well at this distance with 19 starts, six wins, and three placings. In form and will be running strongly again.

RACE 6

Betfred Derby (Group 1) (British Champions Series) (No Geldings) Cl1 (3yo) 1m4f

2 – Ancient Wisdom – Draw 11

He ran second last out by six lengths to Economics. Never out of the money in his six races, he’s won four of them. He prefers more testing ground, so the softer going may be ideal for a terrific run. He’s been the favorite in all his races, so getting 8-1 is a very attractive bet, even with the Aiden O’Brien horses the favorites.

8 – Euphoric – Draw 9

This is the “other” Aiden O’Brien horse within one length of Los Angeles in his race at Leopardstown. He’s only a maiden winning and only ran three times and in the money in all those races. He wants distance and is bred regally for distance, which costs over $ 2 million to purchase. At 26-1, take a close look at this horse.

13 – Mr Hampstead – Draw 5

The longest shot on the board is the only horse who’s run this distance and ran third at Chester. He is still a maiden, but another maiden ran second two years ago, Mojo Star (he ran well in the top company after this race). He may end up as a middle-distance runner, but why not take a big-priced horse in a big race?

RACE 7

Long Shot Northern Dancer Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 1m4f

8 – Flash Bardot – Draw 9

Average effort last time out on the good going at York. A winning effort in the race before on the soft going. Her record at this distance is eight runs, four wins, one placing. She’s ok on the good going and better on the softer running. She will win.

2 – Relentless Voyager – Draw 1

The first start of the season was at Newmarket, losing by five lengths, running third. A maiden winner only on the all-weather, they ran him in the Italian Derby running third, just missing second. He likes the distance so that’s why he’s on my ticket.

13 – Kotari – Draw 12

A winner of three in a row on both the good and heavy going. They had seven runs before and did nothing, then went on this tear. He moves up in class and wins his only starts at this distance. Win again, maybe, but a placing makes more sense.

RACE 8

JRA Tokyo Trophy Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 6f

8 – Mums Tipple

6 – Strike Red

1 – Misty Grey

Rich’s Ranks

Race 2: Princess Elizabeth Stakes – 8:25 am est

8- CHIC COLOMBINE – strange name, but the horse has a lot of versatility in running styles

7 – SPARKS FLY – winner 8/10 on Turf and the last trio of 2nd up starts and none were close

5 – RUNNING LION – probably the class horse in terms of competition faced

4 – ROYAL DRESS – closer getting a little more distance today in 2nd up

Race 3: Betfred Diomed Stakes – 9:35 am est

2 – EMBESTO – tough start might have cost him a chance in last – better start = better result?

4 – REGAL REALITY – never really out of contention in his last 10 – races – 3rd up the key for the old man

1 – HIGHLAND AVENUE – probably the most back class in the race, but none of it in the last 4

5 – ROYAL DUBAI – runs well 1st up

Race 4: Betfred 3YO “Dash” Handicap – 10:10 am est

16 – GRANDLAD – open race – fastest 5F time

8 – MASHADI – 4 seconds in 5 races at the distance – 9/0-7-0 overall

6 – BLUE STORM – lots and lots of front runners, will come from the middle

15 – McLOVEN – has a couple of really fast 5f races

Race 5: Aston Martin “Dash” Handicap – 10:45 am est

7 – DREAM COMPOSER – ran a much faster race last out

9 – LOOKING FOR LYNDA – knocking on the door in 24

3 – SILKY WILKIE – ITM 18/26 at the distance and last race better than it looks – same time on soft as good

4 – CHIPSTEAD – basically AoN at the distance 10/5-0-1 – only 3 wins in 25 at any other

Race 6: Betfred Derby – British Champions Series – 11:30 am est

6 – DANCING GEMINI – reading all the comment -there are a lot the want to be upfront – should get a great trip for his running style

11 – LOS ANGELES – don’t know how good they are until they lose and another that should benefit from all the early heat

2 – ANCIENT WISDOM – has beaten a few other mid level contenders in here

4 – CITY OF TROY – any of his first 3 starts and he’s the winner, the first up in 2024 is a major concern
