York Racecourse Tips and Commentary
22 to 1 Tom’s Tips
Race 1
Sky Bet Strensall Stakes (Group 3) Cl1 (3yo+) 1m1f
9 – See The Fire – Draw 8
She is the class of the field and the only filly in the race. She’s been banging her head against some of the best with some success but not winning. She drops from group one types like Opera Singer and City of Troy. She should win if she runs to her last race, missing by a neck to Opera Singer. But she is only a maiden winner.
3 – Flight Plan – Draw 1
He’s raced four times this season and looked better in his last race, but he still finished fourth by over seven lengths. He was behind Caryn in group one and better in a seven-furlong race at Haydock in group three. Adding distance should result in a better effort at good odds.
2 – Enfjaar – Draw 7
This is the informed horse, with two wins and a second in his last start. He’s moving up from class two races, but the previous three have been reasonable efforts on the all-weather to good going.
Race 2
Sky Bet Melrose Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo) 1m6f
7 – Reaching High – Draw 16
A winner last time out at fourteen furlongs on the all-weather has shown for on the turf, too, with second and a third in recent races. This is a test for him, but he won impressively by over seven lengths so that I will take him on top. It’s a long race, so the draw is only vital for getting the horse in position to have a chance.
4 – Tabletalk – Draw 14
He’s run well in three of his four races against handicap, novice, and maiden company, but against City of Troy in a group one race, he had no chance and ran that way, running tenth. This is the farther he has run, but he is bred to want more distance, and at 20-1, I will take a shot based on his form at this level.
1 – The Equator – Draw 12
He’s been making reasonable efforts, with a win on the heavy going at Leopardstown and a second at Navan last time out. The two group races were ok. He went off the favorite last time out. Let’s see if shipping over here was the right choice for the next race. I think it was.
Race 3
Sky Bet City Of York Stakes (Group 2) Cl1 (3yo+) 7f.
4 – Kinross – Draw 4
He got going too late last time to have any chance of reaching the impressive Audience in that race. He went off the favorite. He raced three times this year with best effort on the all-weather. He’s won this race before. Is this the target race of the year? Getting going sooner and closer to the pace should result in a win.
5 – Shouldvebeenaring – Draw 8
He was won nicely by a neck last time at Deauville. This will be his first try at this distance, so changing jockeys and a measured ride could result in a winning effort. I am going to put him for a placing because of the draw. The inside draws have been doing better in the sprint races at York.
2 – Audience – Draw 5
At one mile in his first season start, he beat Charyn, and the tables were turned in. The next start was a distance behind Charyn at Royal Ascot. Charyn also won the next time out. His race at seven furlongs was a mighty effort, winning by four lengths over Art Power. He will be on the lead or close to it and get the trip; he will be robust again.
Race 4
Sky Bet Ebor Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (4yo+) 1m6f.
11 – Ziggy – Draw 4
Since being away from the races for 451 days, he has run five times, hasn’t been out of the money, and won last time here in York. Now, he adds distance and shows running forwardly placed; he got the job done. I don’t see them changing that tactic today, and adding distance isn’t a concern, and I expect a winning effort again today.
18 – Chillingham – Draw 18
He ran third both times in the last two races at 12 furlongs. He started the season on the all-weather and did nothing, but then he could have done better on the all-weather. He has run this distance twice in his racing career and ran three on the first try and second on the second try. Maybe this is his distance, and he should place in this running.
8 – Magical Zoe – Draw 1
He’s good over the fences, but he did ok on the flat racing. He won at 13 furlongs and placed 16 furlongs last time out, missing by a head. The win was in a maiden race, so this is a step up in class, but they must have seen something in the morning that they liked enough to run against these horses. I will take him to a place at 10-1.
Race 5
Sky Bet Constantine Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 6f.
15 – Two Tribes – Draw 4
He started the season with a second at Newmarket, did awful at Royal Ascot, and ran okay efforts the last two times out, running fourth and fifths. He gets in light with the weight and change of jockey to make things interesting. I like the draw, weight, and form so that he can win here.
5 – Cover Up – Draw 5
He didn’t start well in the last race but still ran fifth in an improved effort over his previous two runs. He started the season on the all-weather, at lower-class levels, with wins. There are signs from the last race of returning to form, so I will put him in the money.
9 – Dare To Hope – Draw 3
He won at Ripon last time as the favorite in his best effort of the season, but he went off as the favorite. The class relief helped and did enough to build confidence to run a reasonable attempt here. I think so.
Race 6
Julia Graves Roses Stakes (Listed Race) Cl1 (2yo) 5f
5 – King of Light
7 – Magnum Force
15 – Make Haste
Race 7
Sky Bet Finale Handicap (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+ 0-105) 1m2½f
13 – Have Secret
17 – Theme Park
8 – Killybegs Warrior

2 – AUDIENCE – the favorite and should be – likely better in 2nd up

2 – APOLLOONE – 3rd up – strong finish in last and continues the momentum today
18 – REINFORCE – firing and strong form right now
6 – BALLYMOUNTBOY – best race was most recent second start and why not one more 6 horse as a longer price?
