Foreign Friday is staying home this week — but Saturday’s destination might be the closest thing American racing has to an international turf meeting.
Tom and Rich head to Kentucky Downs for a massive 11-race opening-day card packed with huge fields, enormous purses, unfamiliar course dynamics and exactly the kind of races where longshots can turn an ordinary afternoon into a very good one.
Kentucky Downs isn’t your typical American racetrack. Its European-style turf course, sweeping configuration and demanding layout create a completely different handicapping puzzle. Add deep fields and horses arriving from different circuits, and simply taking the obvious favorite isn’t always the answer.
Tom approaches the card through traditional handicapping, trip analysis, breeding, workouts, class and trainer intent, while Rich’s Ranks add Kentucky Downs-specific running-style and post-position profiles alongside Smart Sheets signals including PAR races, Total Pace, C-ZONE, class, early and late pace, and improvement potential.
With 11 races on the opening-day card, there are plenty of opportunities to disagree with the betting public and hunt for value.
Race 1 – 1 Mile
Tom’s Tips
8 – Dolly Partime – first start, outside post showed early, and nothing late. Bullet work since last race and with the breeding; better suited for turf. This trainer sets up horses to win at Kentucky Downs and generally does it at good odds.
9 – Nu Way Me – she ran well to get fourth in her start on the turf at Ellis with some challenges in the trip. She needed the start. Trainer is doing well with a limited number of 2yo starters.
6 – Cherokee Purple – closed strongly to run third twice at Colonial. Both races at one mile on the turf. She should be moving late again, and the uphill run will be a good test to see if she catches the speed or the pace horses.

Race 2 – 1 1/16 Miles
Tom’s Tips
8 – Don’s Winner – showed signs of life in his last run at Ellis on sloppy going; he has early speed but just is not finishing. In an earlier race, he closed from the back to run second. Switching to the turf may turn the trick for a win.
9 – Grand Premiere – he has had issues in his last two starts, including slow starts, rushing up, and having nothing left, or traffic issues. He ran well in his two starts at Dundalk on the all-weather, finishing second. Adding blinkers is what this horse needs for his best effort.
1 – Caragogo – he has shown interest early, but his best finish was last race, where he ran third. He tried the sloppy in an off-the-turf race at one mile and showed little late. I think he needs added ground, and this race should suit.

Race 3 – 1 ½ Miles
Tom’s Tips
5 – National Archive – he has run fourth in his last two races, one a stakes race for New York-breds and an allowance at about this level. His last win was at Aqueduct in September of 2025, so after four races in-between, and a distance that should suit him, he has a chance to get a win, but I would put him as the pace setter to have that chance.
7 – Mambo Queen – she is a dead closer and won her last start at Colonial and ran second at Laurel twice. She ran here once before and ran second and her turf record is thirteen starts, four wins and three seconds, so I give her a good chance against these horses.
8 – Malibu Smart – she has won at this distance before and ran second at Kentucky Downs in an allowance race last year. She won her last start at Saratoga running near the pace. Moves up a bit in class but is very useful in these types of races.

Race 4 – 6 ½ Furlongs
Tom’s Tips
6 – Ryba – first-time starter with a series of good workouts. The trainer percentages are against me, but these Twirling Candy offspring seem to love running at Kentucky Downs, and this is an interesting race for a first run.
9 – How’s Al Today – I don’t know, but this horse won first time out at Churchill and ran third, by a distance, in the Saratoga Special, Grade Two race. He’s got a bit of turf breeding in him, and so far, he has run well.
8 – Crystal River – won her first start at Gulfstream as the favorite, driving clear at the end. Latest workouts have been on the turf and going a bit distance. Times are not fast, but building stamina may be the goal. Stay a bit off the pace and close uphill on the outside and she may get it done.

5 – BIATHLON – tr 1 of 89 with 1st time starter – works are too good to ignore
7 – HILLBILLY KOBE – 1st timer with solid score and works
Race 5 – 6 ½ Furlongs
Tom’s Tips
4 – Stormed Off – first-time starter with two good workouts. Her mare side screams turf, and Mark Casse must think she can run well. She was sold twice, so that makes her eligible for this race.
3 – Denial – a very interesting first-time start because Juddmonte Farms bred her and then put her in the Keeneland September Yearling sale, so they must have thought much good about her. She was bought for $4,000. The trainer was the buyer, and she has a good foundation of workouts coming into this race. She won this quarter-of-a-million-dollar race; Juddmonte may want to buy her back.
9 – Elegante Miz – she ran twice, won her first start by a neck, and then ran in a minor stakes race, finishing third. Both races at Gulfstream and on the dirt. She has put in turf workouts since the last race.
Fourth Choice: 8 – Duty Bound

11 – VALKYRIE – too much past class and turf breeding not to have in top 4
Race 6 – 6 ½ Furlongs
Tom’s Tips
4 – Arctic Wolf – he won his first start on the turf at Aqueduct, but in his next start at Ellis, he ran in a stakes race on a yielding turf course, had some issues, and finished sixth. Without those issues, I think he would have run better. With that, the trainer adds blinkers today, and his last workout was a bullet from the starting gate.
7 – Admiral’s Order – his only start was a front-running win in an off-the-turf race at Ellis. With his early pace again, he should fight on at the end. The times were pretty good last time too.
12 – Ultimit Warrior – I put this first starter in my picks because the workouts have been very good. He has the breeding to love the turf from a mare who is by Kitten’s Joy. The last workout was at six furlongs in a good time. No turf works, but maybe…

Race 7 – 6 ½ Furlongs
Tom’s Tips
4 – Ag Bullet – I must start with last year’s winner of this race. She is two for two at Kentucky Downs and ran second at Saratoga last time out. She has a ton of speed to get the lead and play, try to catch me. She ran second in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint to Shisospicy. Big favorite.
8 – Sayidah Dariyan – if there is some horse to beat my top choice, this European invader who last out ran second by a neck at Goodwood. She was beaten by a good runner and had the lead at one point in the race.
9 – In Our Time – she battled on in her last race, running wide, and finished third. With an early start, she had trouble out of the gate. Both races were at Saratoga. She has plenty of speed, but keeping up with my top choice may be tough for her. Since she runs sprints, she is at her best. Bullet workout at Saratoga for the prep for this race.

Race 8 – 1 Mile
Tom’s Tips
5 – Patriots Quest – two dirt races at Ellis, running third in both races. The switch to the turf may be just the thing to get this horse a win. He is certainly bred to like the turf.
7 – Family Crest – first-time starter with some very nice workouts. Turf is, in my mind, the obvious place for this horse’s first start. The trainer’s numbers are against me, but this looks like a good one on paper.
10 – Kurita’s Folly – the only race this horse ran was at Ellis, where he drew post position twelve and had to do a lot of work to get fourth. A good learning experience, and now he draws outside again, but only one turn, which should help. He will come on strong at the end.

12 – UNCLE ANTHONY – first timer with some strong works and turf breeding
6 – KILBARRY – another that could improve enough in 2nd up after slow start in debut
Race 9 – 7 Furlongs
Tom’s Tips
7 – Bluegrass Town – he ran a fair effort at Ellis last time out, finishing fourth despite traffic issues. In his previous three races, he was the betting favorite and was successful in one of those races after one race following the layoff. This is another second-up chance.
6 – Repentless – his only win came in his first start, at Kentucky Downs, where he ran near the pace and closed at the end. He was a bust in a graded stakes and tried to run on the front end on the dirt at Churchill, finishing third. His workouts have been on the all-weather and are good. He should show decent effort in his return.
3 – Capanaparo – he has three runs on the turf, ran second in a maiden effort last year at Saratoga, and his last two races were unlisted stakes races at Aqueduct and Monmouth, where he ran second and sixth with issues. Adds distance today, which may be the key for him.

Race 10 – 1 Mile
Tom’s Tips
1 – Lagynos – ran well last time out in the Fourstardave, a one-mile Grade 1 race at Saratoga, finishing fifth to a top miler. In his five earlier races, he won all of them in graded-stakes company at Churchill and Fairgrounds. He has run four times at Kentucky Downs, winning two and finishing second once. He should be the favorite.
4 – Herchee – ran awful last time out at Ellis. His previous efforts are a mixed bag of wins, a second, and some forgettable races, but he rebounds after average races. He is a five-year-old who has raced only ten times, and four of those were winning efforts. He has run once at Kentucky Downs in 2024 and finished second. If you toss the last effort, he will run a good race today.
7 – Quatrocento – his last race may have been his worst ever, finishing last of twelve by sixteen lengths. I tossed it. Early in the year, he had front-running wins at Tampa (Grade Three) and Gulfstream, and then a second at Churchill. Neither of the two last races was any good, but he may be just too far for the company. He has plenty of early pace. He has won four of his six races at this distance and is two for two at Kentucky Downs. His workouts have been good, giving him a chance in this race.

3 – MAYCOCKS BAY – should take a reasonable step forward in round 2 off the sidelines
2 – CHASING THE CROWN – ITM 9/10 at the distance – won at this level at KD too
Race 11 – 6 ½ Furlongs
Tom’s Tips
8 – Candy Illusion – first-time starter with excellent workouts at Keeneland. An offspring of Twirling Candy should love the rolling nature of the racecourse.
2 – Life’s Mystery – solid effort on first start at Gulfstream. A bit wide and needed more at the finish. For me, a good first up. Good workout coming into this race, and not 100% sure on the breeding, but why not try.
5 – Just Peachy – two second-place finishes in her first two races at Aqueduct and Saratoga. She had issues in both races, so the key may be finally getting a clean run. Moved from sprint to route without issue, except for the running of the races. Back to a sprint and should be the favorite.

Kentucky Downs Opening Day: Final Thoughts
Kentucky Downs rewards a different style of handicapping than most American racetracks. The unique configuration, long uphill stretch, enormous fields and influx of horses from different circuits can expose runners whose form looks strong on paper but doesn’t necessarily translate to this course.
That is exactly why Tom and Rich are looking beyond simply identifying the most obvious horse in each race. Trip, turf breeding, running style, Kentucky Downs experience, pace, post-position tendencies, improvement potential and price all matter when trying to uncover horses the betting public may underestimate.
Eleven races. Huge purses. Big fields. And plenty of opportunities for chaos.
That’s about as close to a Foreign Friday card as we’re going to get without leaving the country.
