Sha Tin returns with another competitive Sunday card featuring lightly raced runners, improving form cycles, proven course specialists, and several races where pace could play a decisive role. This race-by-race breakdown combines Tom’s Tips and Rich’s Ranks for Races 6–10, highlighting potential favorites, value contenders, and longshot opportunities.
🏇 SHA TIN PICKS
RACE 6 – SWAN HANDICAP – 6:30 am ET
Tom’s Tips
11 – Gorgeous Victory – showed life last time out. Horse is a maiden but has been run well enough to get third last time. A little wide, but he found his footing late. The jockey switch shows me confidence in a win, finally.
3 – Sunday’s Serenade – two good races, but it is a late runner and gets into third last time, and a second at Happy Valley going 1650m the race before. Post eleven may help keep this horse out of traffic, which has been a problem in the past two races.
1 – Meaningful Dragon – won last time, so carries top weight in this race. A tight finish, and the jockey dropped his stick. Ran awful in the race before in 2025, but there was a reason: lame in the right front leg. Won the race before. So, first up in May, he won.
Rich’s Ranks
1 – Meaningful Dragon – should be out front – maybe by himself at easy fractions
7 – Polar Patch – most upside potential in just his 4th race
4 – Akermanis Gold – Longshot with 7 furlong times that fits with these
11 – Gorgeous Victory – Zac Purton on another somewhat lightly raced horses
RACE 7 – ANSER HANDICAP – 7:05 am ET
Tom’s Tips
3 – Superb Spirit – Won last time nicely at the end. One start before was also a good effort. He should be the favorite and top jockey on board again.
7 – Incredible Moment – issues last time at the start. Speed horse who couldn’t get the lead. Breaking wide again and will need to be used at the start.
6 – Lucrative Eight – he hasn’t won yet, but in three starts, he has run second twice and third in his first start. The second race was the best: he took the lead late and was caught.
Rich’s Ranks
6 – Lucrative Eight – hasn’t won yet but has the best 6f times
4 – Mabubu – has a fast 6f time too and has room for upside in 2nd up
3 – Superb Spirit – ML Fav with Zac Purton – but odds too low for a field like this
8 – Lean Flyer – 1st time starter just needs to be a little faster than barrier trials
RACE 8 – PEACOCK HANDICAP – 7:35 am ET
Tom’s Tips
5 – Max Que – didn’t have the best run last time, held back and finished evenly in six. Won his previous start after quickening and keeping on. His only poor race was the last one; the other races were in-the-money finishes, including two wins.
9 – Juneau Pride – a strong run last time, three wide after issues at the start. He will add distance today, and if you toss the 2000m race, he should be able to be moving at the end. He needs to sit off the lead for the best chance.
8 – Mighty Masts – finished third off a slow pace last time and a bumpy start. He runs his best race when taken back and makes one run.
Rich’s Ranks
2 – Soleil Fighter – out front – not a lot of speed here – wins on the lead
1 – Sagacious Life – most success at the track and should be close early and close it out
RACE 9 – SNIPE HANDICAP – 8:05 am ET
Tom’s Tips
1 – Victory Sky – he has run in the money in five out of six starts, with three wins all on the all-weather. The trainer used a 10lbs apprentice to win and get the weight off. On Sunday, he will use a 2lbs apprentice. His running style isn’t a single type; he can be near the lead or make a run.
3 – Turquoise Velocity – he’s a speed horse who won at this level but not on the all-weather; in fact, this is his first start. He ran fifth last time out at Happy Valley and asked late, but nothing was left. I am taking a chance but with his speed, I think he will hold on for a placing.
6 – Mighty Commander – he is also making his first start on the all-weather, won last time out at 1400m coming from off the pace, and had a wound on his right knee. He may need a race before his best performance, but this may be the right move to place him in this race.
Rich’s Ranks
4 – Aurora Patch – runs back to Feb 26 race in 1:07 and 3 – easy winner
1 – Victory Sky – has some of the best 6f times and done well at Sha Tin 6/3-2-0
2 – Blazing Wind – probably the most consistent in the field – Zac again
10 – Pi Legend – Speed and can fire 1st up
RACE 10 – SPOONBILL HANDICAP – 8:40 am ET
Tom’s Tips
7 – Goldfield – ok first start. He was wide most of the race and gave way at the top of the stretch and ran last. But he showed something early and was three lengths off the leaders. For me, classic shows something, and also shows he needed a race. He has won one race before and placed in another.
10 – Trinity Treasure – he showed nothing in the first attempt in Hong Kong at Happy Valley. In his last race, he led early but couldn’t hold on in the stretch and ran fourth. With a proper break, he will run a good race.
3 – Pope Cody – ran third last time out, coming from way back. His is a normal running style, nothing early. The difference today is a shorter distance, which he’s won at before, showed something last time, and just needs a good trip to have running room at the end.
Rich’s Ranks
8 – Big Return – definitely the right distance 3/3 – 1 win in 14 at any other
9 – Quantum Legend – closer going a route for the first time
2 – Endued – ran a little faster last out – always close – but a little short at the end
14 – Withallmyfaith – longshot Tom miler – 9/3-0-3 – all others 16/1-4-1
