Fair Grounds Racetrack Horse Racing Picks and Commentary

Terry “Hollywood” Hay’s Handicapping

Fair Grounds Race 10 – $300,000 MUNIZ MEMORIAL CLASSIC STAKES GRADE II

9 – Santin came in from Del Mar after finishing 2nd in a G1 race on the turf only beaten a neck and ran his first race at The Fairgrounds. He was the race favorite but ran 4th beaten only ½ of a length, but the trainer wins 25% of the races when bringing a beaten favorite back to race again.

7 – Another Mystery has won two out the last three races, the last one was a G3 race at Sam Houston and earned the highest last race speed rating. He is one for one at today’s distance.

2 – Sacred Life ran 6th after being bumped at Gulfstream in his last race losing by only 2-1/4 lengths. He has the best Turf Speed among today’s starters.

3 – Devamani likes the turf finishing in the money in 69% of the races, winning 23% of those races. In addition, he likes the distance finishing in the money in 75% of the races, winning 38% of the races.

Race Grounds Race 11 – $400,000 FAIR GROUNDS OAKS GRADE II

1 – Echo Zulu has won all four of her career races at three different tracks and at four different distances and has the best dirt speed among today’s starters. Unless there is a problem at the start at the race, I can’t imagine this horse losing.

2 – Turnerloose comes in from Del Mar and switched from the turf to dirt and won the race at today’s distance. She has a high % winning trainer Brad Cox and high % winning Jockey Florent Geroux.

4 – Bernabreezy has finished in the money three out of three starts in her races at The Fairgrounds, has a high % winning trainer and a good 4F workout on 19Mar FG 4f ft :48.3 B 24/110.

3 – Favor has won two races in at Gulfstream Park at today’s distance. She has a good 4F workout Pbd 4f ft :48.2 B 2/25.

Fair Grounds Race 12 – $1 M LOUISIANA DERBY GRADE II

2 – Zozos does not know what it feels like to lose a race yet. He won his debut race at The Fairgrounds and won the next race at Oaklawn Park at a 1-1/16 by 10 lengths. I think the extra distance in today’s race sets up well for him.

6 – Epicenter won his last race at The Fairgrounds, the G2 – Risen Star. His best dirt speed is fastest among today’s starters, and he has a high % winning trainer Steven Asmussen and high % winning Jockey Joel Rosario.

5 – Kupuna ran 2nd at The Fairgrounds last race and has two bullet 5F workout in a row. Trainer/Jockey combo in the last 14 days has finished in the money six out of eight races, winning two of the starts (8 2-2-2).

3 – Call Me Midnight is a deep closer who won his last race at The Fairgrounds at a 1-1/16 and I think he is another horse that may benefit with the extra distance in today’s race. He has a good 4F workout on 19Mar FG 4f ft :47.2 B 2/110.

Swiss Army Shawn’s Selections

Fair Grounds Race 10 – $300,000 MUNIZ MEMORIAL CLASSIC STAKES GRADE II

PACE PROJECTION: There is some decent speed in here between the #4 Cavalry Charge, #5 Forty Under, and #8 Two Emmys. I would expect the #8 to push the issue and get the lead however i don’t any of those horses winning this race.

#9 Santin– This horse hasn’t lost a race by more than a half a length which was last race. That was after a 3 month layoff. Should be ready for a big effort off of that race. There should be enough speed in here to set this horse up. Has been close to winning tougher races than this is.

#3 Devamani– Battle tested and will need some pace which he should get. Has finished in the exacta in half of his career races 14 of 28. In the exacta in 6 of 8 at this distance. Only raced twice last year and now it is 8 years old. That last race you can throw it as it was his first race in 8 months and didn’t get the best trip.

#8 Two Emmys– Should be the speed of the speed. His speed usually leads him to a good finish in at least the exotics. Has finished in the exacta in 10 of 15 career turf races.

Plays: $20 win #9 $1 exbox 3,8,9 $1 Tribox 3,8,9

Race Grounds Race 11 – $400,000 FAIR GROUNDS OAKS GRADE II

PACE PROJECTION: #1 Echo Zula should get the early lead but doesn’t need it to win. There a couple horses in here that could press him including the #6 Hidden Connection.

#1 Echo Zulu– Unbeaten and has already won 3 grade 1 races . Has won all of them by 4 + lengths. Has been off for over 4 months but workouts look ok. This should be a good race to come back get a win and prepared for bigger races this year. Has won at 4 different distances this race will be the same distance as her last race.

#3 Favor– The horse that is the most lightly raced horse in the field with only 3 career races. She has won 2 of them. Got really good connections in Gaffalione and Pletcher. Should be right off the pace.

#2 Turnerloose– Last race was her first race on the dirt and came after a 3 month layoff. She won that race it was a Grade 2 and at Fairgrounds right like this race.

Plays: $10 exacta 1 /2,3 $2 Tri 1 /2,3/2,3

Fair Grounds Race 12 – $1 M LOUISIANA DERBY GRADE II

PACE PROJECTION: The most likely leader will be the ML and overall likely favorite #6 Epicenter. The horse that might pressure him is #7 Pioneer of Medina but unlikely he can keep up in the beginning.

#6 Epicenter– Might get an uncontested lead and if he does this race will be over as soon as the gate opens. The only horse in the field with more than one win at Fairgrounds. Not much to dislike.

#9 Rattle N Roll– Was a big disappointment in the Fountain of Youth but I’ll give him a pass since that race was off a 5 month layoff. I still think this horse is probably the most talented horse in the field besides the favorite. Will have to overcome the post position and what could be the lack of speed besides the favorite.

#3 Call Me Midnight– Beat this favorite in his last race. Should be competitive and finish in the exotics here. I just don’t see him getting enough pace this time to run into to beat the favorite.. Has been off for 2 months since that race as well. Is 2 for 2 with James Graham and 0 for 5 with other Jockeys.

Plays: $10 Ex 6/3,9 $3 tribox 3,6,9
