Santa Anita Race 4 – $200,000 SAN CARLOS STAKE – GRADE II
PACE PROJECTION: There is other speed in this race however it’s clear that #1 Brickyard Ride will be your early leader. There are a few in here most notably the three outside horses that are hoping for a speed duel up front.
#1 Brickyard Ride- Loves Santa Anita winning 8 of 11 career races there. Will only have 12 days between races but last race was an easy win in a short field of 5. Will likely be the pace setter and if he gets clear early forget about it.
#9 Shooters Shoot- Has run 2 really good races since being claimed by trainer Richard Baltas. Should be about mid pack in this group and as some of the speed fades he will be gaining late. I could see a similar race and result as the last 2 races. Unlike the others in here this horse’s better races are yet to come.
#6 Eight Rings- A battle tested horse that has lost to a lot of great horses and has held his own. Will be part of the pace but probably will have to sit off. That’s where I lose confidence in this horse. I think this horse is going to win off the pace. Also 0 for 4 at the distance. I do think this horse will hang for a piece and maybe a 4th straight 3rd place finish.
Plays: $10 EX 1/6,9 $2 Tri 1/6,9/4,6,9
Race 9 – $500,000 BEHOLDER MILE STAKES – GRADE I
PACE PROJECTION: A short 6 horse and there are 2 main speed horses #3 As Time Goes By expected early leader and #6 Envountante.
#3 As Time Goes By- I would expect her to be the early leader and control the race. Since Flavian Prat has gotten aboard her last 2 starts, she has been really impressive winning both on the front end. Likes Santa Anita winning 4 of 7 with the others being place finishes. In two starts at the mile distance won 1 race by 9 lengths and the other finished 2nd behind Swiss Skydiver in this race last year.
#5 Miss Bigly- Can win from anywhere. Has speed but will typically sit off. Has won at Santa Anita before and runs good there. Loves the distance winning 5 of 8 races and never finishing outside of the trifecta. If you take out her turf starts, she is 16 for 16 finishing in the trifecta winning half of them.
#6 Envountante- A very talented and battle tested horse. Interested to see how much she battles with the #3 As Time Goes By or if she just sits off the lead. Gets John Velazquez for the first time as she also races at Santa Anita for the first time. Has been off for 3 months and her workouts have been just ok.
Plays: $20 win #3 $2 exbox 3,5,6 $1 Tribox 3,5,6
Race 10 – $500,000 FRANK E KILROE MILE STAKES – GRADE I
PACE PROJECTION: There is a bit of speed in here with multiple horses that will push the pace led by #3 Beyond Brillant and #7 Tell Your Daddy.
#6 Law Profesor – In a wide-open race I was looking for a horse that keeps getting better and this is where I landed. Has run good on his two turf starts but I really like is the two races after that turf win. Yes, it was on the dirt, but he was closer to the pace, and he put in really good back-to-back races. If he stays closer to the pace here could be good enough at a decent price.
#7 Tell Your Daddy- This horse has been great since Johnny V. took over 4 starts ago. The first three races with Johnny V. all were triple figure Beyer figures. Will be on the lead here or sitting behind the most likely early leader #3 Beyond Brillant. Coming off an almost 4-month layoff but workouts have been good.
#4 Count Again- Will be coming late but a lot of times he leaves himself with too much to do. Was 0 for 5 last year as a 6-year-old but did run in all Grade 1 and 2 races. Came back this year as a 7-year-old and won off a 5 and half month layoff. Need to use in exotics but not one I would use on top.
Plays: $20 win #6 $1 exbox 4,6,7 $1 tribox 4,6,7
22 to 1 Tom’s Tips
Santa Anita Race 4 – $200,000 SAN CARLOS STAKE – GRADE II
9 – Shooter Shoot
Love the last race even with issues he just missed, extra furlong helps
2 7F races, one win and one around 2 turns at CT, toss
3 works since last race, all were good especially the 47.1H
Good odds today
4 – Cezanne
Ok effort last out vs some of the same horse today, may have needed the race
Grade 3 winner for long layoff until January race
Better distance? Won at 1 mile, first try at 7F
If he runs to his works, he can win but may still need another race
7 – Phantom Dance
Last 6 efforts in the money at distance of 1 mile or greater
Never tried this distance and it’s been a while this 5 year old gelding has been going only 1 turn, not at this short of a distance
Late developer with issues?
The last work was interesting choice, 6F from the gate running 1:14.3, prep
Took 5 races to been to break maiden but first 4 tries were on all-weather and turf
Change of EQ today with adding blinkers which must have been used in the workout
Interesting
Race 9 – $500,000 BEHOLDER MILE STAKES – GRADE I
3 – As Time Goes By
Big winner last out by 13 L in grade 3 – comment geared down
Has run this distance twice at Santa Anita 1 win 1 second – the second was in this race last year to Swiss Skydiver
Good works leading up to this race – I like the 1:11.4H
She should win her first grade 1 race here
5 – Miss Bigly
Nice win at OP last out in grade 3 going 1 1/16
She moves late, sometimes, so if the speed backups up, she should be right there
She has raced more forwardly in the past
Record at 1 mile is 8 starts 5 wins 1 second 2 thirds
In form and should get a piece here
6 – Envoutante
Ships in from Florida after win in the Fall City at CD grade 2
Showed plenty of speed in that race
Drops in distance but going around 2 turns and has placed in a 1-mile race
Distance too short?
Race 10 – $500,000 FRANK E KILROE MILE STAKES – GRADE I
5 – Whisper Not
Hasn’t run since October but good works coming to this race
Runs ok off layoff with
Will show speed here as in the past, could wire the field, if ready
5 good races when came to the US and then 3 not so good races but
SA race, not great, at SAR faced very good group and SA race was too short at 6 1/2F
Distance record is 6 starts 2 wins 1 third
If he gets the lead, he could go all the way
3 – Beyond Brilliant
Grade 1 winner in Hollywood Derby lead and held on
Last race was a moved turf race at 1 mile as the favorite vs on the horses running here
Layoff coming into the race with ok works
Appears good on both surfaces and ran 2 shorts races to start career on turf and 3 races at distance 1 1/16 or greater
Never off the board in any of his turf races
Will need to step here with his 4 year old debut
4 – Count Again
First up winner last out in grade 3 at 1 mile
Came from off the pace to win
Has done well at the distance 5 starts 3 wins 1 third
Good work of :59.1H coming into this race
Has gotten off slow before but good start have results in good business
