Terry “Hollywood” Hay’s Handicapping

Del Mar R8: $400,000 BING CROSBY STAKES GRADE I

7 – Letsgetlucky finished in the money in ten out of ten career races, finishing 2nd in the last race a Grade 3 losing to Jackies Warrior by only ¾ of a length. He has the highest last race speed rating, competes well at today’s distance, and has a good 4F workout on Jul-24th.

2 –Shaaz has won three out of four career races finishing 3rd in his last race a G3 affair. He switches to a high % winning jockey Juan Hernandez and the shorter distance will be a plus and he has three bullet workouts in a row.

3 –Bagboss has won two races in a row at Churchill Downs. He appears to either lead a race or come from off the pace to win and has a good 4F workout on July-23rd.

1 –Desmond Doss is another entry who has won two races in a row and is going for a hat trick. During the last two years trainer Steven Miyadi has won 80% of the Graded Stakes he has a horse entered in.

Race 9 – $82,000 AOC

3 – One Fast Bro has done well on the turf finishing in the money in eleven out of sixteen starts, winning two of the starts and likes the distance finishing in the money in 80% of the time. He took a 2-month break, but the trainer wins 24% of the races when his entry takes a 46–90-day break. He finished 3rd vs similar in his last race after lacking racing room in the upper stretch, has the highest speed figure at today’s distance and his best turf speed is fastest among today’s starters.

2 – Peace of Ekati comes in from Gulfstream Park after winning two out of three races this year, finishing 10th in his last race after getting squeezed early and coming into the stretch 2-3wide so I will ignore that race. He can improve at the shorter distance and has several good workouts in a row in preparation for this race.

10 – Midnight Jostar is a deep closer winning two out of four races at Del Mar using this running style. He ran 2nd vs similar in his last race only losing by a neck, has a trainer/jockey combo who in the last 14 days has this record (7 3-2-0) and has a good 5F workout on July-24th.  The only negative is the race might be a bit short.

4 – Shadrack is in top form after winning his last race at Golden Gate fields. He has done well at today’s distance and has a good jockey and trainer. He has a good ROI on the turf, at the distance and in allowances races.

Del Mar Race 10: $300,000 SAN DIEGO HANDICAP GRADE II

2 – Defunded is lightly raced this year with two starts, running 2nd in his last race the G1 Gold Cup at 1-1/4 miles and now shortens to 1-1/16 which could be a plus. I like that he can either go to the front or come from behind to win a race.

1 – There Goes Harvard has won three races in a row and is one for one at today’s distance. He has the highest last race speed rating receiving it while winning his last race at Santa Anita the G1 Gold Cup and has a good 5F workout on July-24th.

3 – Mandaloun has won six out of eleven career starts so you know he likes winning. He came home from a disappointing race in the G1 Saudi Cup and finished 4th in the G2 Foster. He had a good workout on 23rd of July CD 5f ft 1:00.3 B 3/31 which shows he ready to compete here.

8 – Country Grammer won G1 Dubai World Cup in March and has had three bullet workouts in a row which shows he is in top form. He has finished in the money in seven out of ten career starts winning four of the races. The only negative is the distance may be too short as I think 1-1/4 miles is a better fit.

$1.50 Pick 3 – Cost $96.00

Race 8:   1, 2, 3, 7
Race 9:   2, 3, 4, 10
Race 10: 1, 2, 3, 8

Swiss Army Shawn’s Selections

Del Mar R8: $400,000 BING CROSBY STAKES GRADE I

PACE PROJECTION: There is a bunch of speed in this race with #4 DRAIN THE CLOCK probably being the fastest. He will most certainly be pressured which could set the race up for some one of the pace.

#9 AMERICAN THEORM–   Won last time out and beat some of these same horses.  Had two months off and is working out good. He comes back and gets a possible good pace scenario for his running style.  Has finished in the exacta in 6 of 9 career fast dirt track races.

#1 DIAMOND DOSS– Has won two races in a row which are his only two races of this year. He should be another one who gets a favorable pace scenario. This horse can run any style but in this race I would imagine that would have him sit about mid pack and then make the run. Has never missed out on the trifecta in 8 dirt starts and has won 5 of those 8. Trainer Steve Miyadi is hitting at 80% in graded stakes the last 2 years combined winning 4 of 5.  The one he lost he got second with Lieutenant Dan in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint losing to Golden Pal last year.

#4 BAGABOSS– Has finished in the exacta in 6 of 7 career races. At this distance 2 wins and 2 second place finishes in 4 starts. Has speed but can run any style.  Has won 2 races in a row.

Plays:  $20 win #9 $5 exbox 1,9 $1 exbox 1,4,9 $1 Tribox 1,4,9

Race 9 – $82,000 AOC

PACE PROJECTION:  A full field with a nice mix of running styles there is definitely enough pace in here to keep everyone honest.

#5 COALINGA ROAD– Has won 2 races over the Del Mar turf course and won both. Has never gone this far on turf but did it twice on dirt and finished second both times. Performs better on turf than dirt so distance should not be a problem.  Can run any style and in here would probably be better to sit around mid-pack and then close.  Lifetime has finished in the exacta in 7 of 13 starts.

#6 GOLIAD– Has speed to get good position but doesn’t need the lead. Has finished in the trifecta in a 3 starts on Del Mar turf but hasn’t won yet.  Making his second start back after a 11-month layoff.

#10 MIDNIGHT JOSTAR– Closes from deep and is always around at the finish. Will get pace in this race to run at and has won 2 of 4 at Del Mar. I downgraded him some because he has never won at this distance in fact, he has just hit the board twice both seconds in 6 starts.

PLAYS: $20 win #5 $1exbox 5,6,10 $1 tri box 5,6,10

Del Mar Race 10: $300,000 SAN DIEGO HANDICAP GRADE II

PACE PROJECTION:  #2 DEFUNDED looks to be the speed of the race however there are a few in here who may go as well including #4 STILLETO BOY.

#2 DEFUNDED– Has been off for two months but workouts look great.  Looks like he may go right to the front and try to wire the field.  Likes the distance in two starts has a win and a second.  Has a win at Del Mar as well in two starts.

#3 MANDALOUN– Making his second start after going to the Saudi Cup in February. Should get a nice trip off some of the speed in here. Workouts have been really good since last race. Likes the distance winning 2 of 3 with a third.

#8 COUNTRY GRAMMER– The class of the field. Has been off for 4 months but has been working out really well since getting back to the states. Gets a new rider John Valazquez.

PLAYS:  $20 win #2 $1 exbox 2,3,8 $1 tribox 2,3,8

22 to 1 Tom’s Horse Racing Tips

Del Mar R8: $400,000 BING CROSBY STAKES GRADE I

8 – Diamond Ops

Ran 3rd with trouble last out, 4 wide and then finished evenly at Del Mar, the winner of this OC80k race was CZ Rocket

First start at Del Mar was good prep for today, wheeling the horse right back after racing 7 days ago

Toss his turf races in graded company

He’s back sprinting at 6F on the dirt with a record of 9 starts 4 wins 1 second 2 thirds

Price?

7 – Letsgetlucky

Ran at OP last out, a close 2nd to one of the best sprinters in Jackies Warrior, layoff until now

Worked :47.4H at Del Mar on 7/24

Cal-Bred has won off layoffs before

Never out of the money at this distance 5 starts 2 wins 1 second 2 thirds

New rider in Tyler Baze

3 – Bagboss

Won last 2 races at CD by 3+L in allowance and OC65.2k company

This horse has never been out of the money in all it’s races

Has speed but also has tactical speed and he showed this in the last race

New jockey in Umberto Rispoli

Ready to roll again

Race 9 – $82,000 AOC

4 – Shadrack

Won last race at GG by a neck in 32k claimer over 1 mile

Layoff into this race with modest works

In for a tag to be eligible to run in this race, he’s won 6 times

Generally, runs late but showed tactical speed last out

Price shot for me

6 – Goliad

First race in almost 1 year was won he showed speed and first ok, it was a first race

Drops a little in class for last race and has done well going 1 mile with 6 starts 1 win 2 seconds 1 third

Tried stakes company last season without success but did place 2nd in grade 3 in Dec 2019

2 races last year, ran 2nd in debut and 4th showing speed in next start, both at the OC40k level

Interesting play

12 – Lammas

Shipped from UK where he raced mainly on the AW tracks in class 3 and 4 handicaps races going distances

This year, he ran 6 times 3 wins 1 second, the wins include 2 at the 1 mile distance at a difficult track to run at Southwell

The Wolverhampton win was in a rider restricted race but came back to run 2nd with the same rider in next start

Layoff since April, gets Lasix and blinkers on

Trainers record of shipper into the US is 23 starts 35% have won and 61% have run in the money with positive ROI

Post position not great but Abel Cedillo should be able to figure it out if he has some under him

Del Mar Race 10: $300,000 SAN DIEGO HANDICAP GRADE II

5 – Senor Buscador

Won last, first start of the season, at LS in allowance race by 2L

This was coming off a long layoff after running 5th to Mandaloun in the Risen Star at FG

I think he will continue to improve after first race and since spot to try graded company again

2 works at Del Mar helps

Trainer is good shipping horses, but his graded stakes record is not great

This could all turn around today with this lightly racehorse

3 – Mandaloun

2 less than brilliant efforts in last 2 races, the Stephen Foster was good for awhile but never back up to run 4th

Toss the Saudi Cup, showed nothing and may have not liked that sandy/dirt surface

Prior to those races, he was very good except for 1 race

Works into this race a good

If he runs his race, he will be tough in here

7 – Tripoli

Nothing but trouble in this last race on the turf in grade 3 race at Santa Anita but has won with an off the turf to dirt move before

Ran 2nd in this race last year to Express Train

And then won the Pacific Classic in next start

He’s has 3 starts at Del Mar, 1 win 1 second and his other race that he was never involved in was the Breeder’s Cup Classic

Need race, move back to dirt, watch out
