Saratoga • Race 8 • 1 1/8 Miles • Dirt
The Shuvee Stakes may feature only seven fillies, but it’s an outstanding example of why handicapping is about weighing strengths against vulnerabilities rather than simply picking the fastest horse.
Our Profile of a Winner for Saratoga’s 1 1/8-mile dirt races shows that early speed has been the dominant winning style. Four of the first fourteen races at the distance have been won in gate-to-wire fashion, and horses that establish position early have consistently held a tactical advantage.
Post position has also played a role. The rail has won at roughly half the expected rate, making it the least desirable draw so far. Posts 2 and 3 have produced the strongest results, while posts 4 through 7 have performed almost exactly to expectation. No winner has started from post eight or wider, although that statistic doesn’t apply in today’s compact field.
Now let’s examine each filly individually.
1 – SNOWYTE (6-1 ML • 5-1 SIM)
The Case For
SNOWYTE is quietly one of the more interesting contenders in the field. While she starts from the rail—a post that has underperformed at this distance—her overall profile remains competitive. She owns a solid 38.4% PAR+, ranking among the better fillies in today’s race, and Smart Sheets actually projects her slightly stronger than the Morning Line at 5-1.
She also ranks third in SIM Speed, third in Total Pace, and third in Late Pace, giving her one of the more balanced pace profiles in the field. Her positive class move and recent improvement suggest she’s still moving in the right direction.
The Concern
The rail has simply not been kind to runners at this distance, and SNOWYTE doesn’t project as one of the primary pace setters. If she becomes boxed in behind the leaders or loses early position, she’ll likely need a perfect trip to overcome both the post and the race shape.
2 – AEOLIAN (15-1 ML • 124-1 SIM)
The Case For
AEOLIAN benefits from drawing Post 2, historically the best-performing post at this distance. She also receives a positive class move and shows meaningful improvement of more than two lengths from her previous effort, suggesting she’s entering the race in better form than her recent finishes alone might indicate.
The Concern
Unfortunately, the simulations remain overwhelmingly skeptical.
Her 124-1 SIM Odds are the longest in the field, and her 0.8% PAR+ indicates she almost never reaches the winning speed required for today’s class. While the favorable post gives her every opportunity to save ground, she’ll need dramatic improvement to threaten these rivals.
3 – FULLY SUBSCRIBED (2-1 ML • 5-1 SIM)
The Case For
FULLY SUBSCRIBED enters with one of the strongest overall resumes in the race. She owns the second-highest PAR+ (44.8%), ranks second in Total Pace, second in Late Pace, and carries one of the strongest trainer-jockey combinations in the field.
She also shows continued improvement through the middle stages of her races while consistently producing competitive speed figures.
On ability alone, she absolutely belongs among the major contenders.
The Concern
The simulations are noticeably less enthusiastic than the Morning Line.
While bettors are expected to make her approximately 2-1, Smart Sheets projects 5-1, suggesting she wins significantly less often than the public may believe.
She also enters off a slight regression in her most recent race and may need to avoid getting caught chasing SCOTTISH LASSIE through demanding fractions.
4 – SCOTTISH LASSIE (9/5 ML • 7/5 SIM)
The Case For
Every major category begins with SCOTTISH LASSIE.
She owns the highest SIM Speed Figure (101.6), the highest PAR+ (58.3%), the highest Total Pace, the highest Early Pace, the highest Late Pace, and is projected to be the First Call Leader over 40% of the time.
Perhaps most impressive, she earned the highest last-race speed figure in the field—four points faster than the next closest rival.
That kind of separation is significant at the graded stakes level.
She also carries one of the strongest EP C-Zone ratings, indicating today’s projected pace closely resembles races she has already proven she can win.
Simply put, she owns the strongest overall profile.
The Concern
Being the best horse doesn’t guarantee the best betting opportunity.
At a short price, she’ll likely need to run close to her best race again. If another filly forces her into an uncomfortable early duel or if she fails to reproduce that exceptional last-out performance, the advantage narrows considerably.
5 – BLESS THE BROKEN (7/2 ML • 17-1 SIM)
The Case For
BLESS THE BROKEN has enough talent to make things interesting. She owns a respectable 26.9% PAR+, continues to improve both early and middle in her races, and receives strong trainer statistics entering today’s event.
Her 53.8% ANY C-Zone also suggests today’s projected pace is one she has handled successfully before.
The Concern
The simulations remain unconvinced.
Smart Sheets projects her at 17-1, substantially longer than her 7/2 Morning Line, making her one of the most significant negative overlays in the race.
She’ll need to outperform both her previous speed figures and the simulations.
6 – EUNOMIA (8-1 ML • 36-1 SIM)
The Case For
EUNOMIA owns a respectable 17.1% PAR+, continues to improve early in her races, and ranks among the better EP C-Zone horses, suggesting today’s projected pace isn’t working against her.
If the leaders become vulnerable late, she has enough tactical ability to capitalize.
The Concern
The overall numbers remain difficult to overlook.
Her 36-1 SIM Odds, lower Total Pace ranking, and lack of standout speed figures suggest she’ll need multiple favorites to underperform while producing one of her best lifetime efforts.
7 – VALTELLINA (20-1 ML • 6-1 SIM)
The Case For
If there’s a longshot capable of surprising this field, it may be VALTELLINA.
The Morning Line dismisses her at 20-1, yet Smart Sheets projects 6-1, making her arguably the biggest value horse in the race.
She owns a strong 39.1% PAR+, continues improving across early, middle, and late pace, and posts the highest overall C-Zone (87.9%) while also leading the PC C-Zone, indicating today’s projected pace strongly favors her preferred running style.
Those aren’t random positives—they all tell the same story.
The Concern
The question is class.
While today’s projected pace fits beautifully, she’ll still need to prove she belongs against Grade II company. She doesn’t possess SCOTTISH LASSIE’S raw speed figures and may simply run into a better horse if the favorite delivers another top performance.
Final Thoughts
This race revolves around one central question:
Can SCOTTISH LASSIE repeat the performance that earned her the highest last-race speed figure in the field while controlling the pace?
If she does, the rest may simply be running for second.
If she doesn’t, the race opens considerably.
FULLY SUBSCRIBED has the class and consistency to capitalize.
SNOWYTE brings a balanced profile despite the difficult rail draw.
VALTELLINA may be the most intriguing value play in the field, with simulations, PAR+, improvement, and C-Zone all suggesting she’s more dangerous than her 20-1 Morning Line implies.
The beauty of Smart Sheets is that it doesn’t ask you to accept one opinion. It gives you multiple pieces of evidence—pace, simulations, historical profiles, speed, and value—so you can decide which story is most likely to unfold when the gates open.
