Jockey and HorseRacingToday.net friend, Tyler Conner shares his thoughts on his mounts tonight at Penn National Racetrack:
Race 1– SPIN CYCLE
This horse always seems to show up for me, he runs hard every time no matter the competition, but he will really need to improve to win this race. There looks to be plenty of speed, so I’d like to sit just behind and let him relax. When he sees an opening, he gets aggressive and uses to much energy early in the race. Hopefully I can sit close enough to the speed and get through when it’s time to go.
Race 2– MY BRIDGET VERDOT
The drop in class and stretch out in distance should really help this horse, I thought she would improve off her first start since she showed some run but last time was a dull effort. This race is much easier, but I still don’t see myself sitting very close early on. I’d like to get her comfortable early and see if she will give me that closing run, she showed her first time out. If she does that, I think she will be very competitive.
Race 3– AIN’T MISBEHAVIN
I really love this old warhorse. He clearly knows how to get the job done with winning 21 races in his career, but this is a pretty good step up in class off his last race. There’s more speed in this race than I’d prefer with this horse. I have to be really aggressive the first couple jumps to get him interested and then let him settle where he is happy, which I hope isn’t more than 2-4 lengths off the lead. He really prefers to be outside also, so my post position really helps that. He never likes to run on his left lead, so I usually have to start riding him just after the half mile pole. If we get that type of trip, I don’t see why he can’t be there in the win photo
Race 4– VW TURBO
This horse stumbled really badly at the start last time so took pretty much all her chances away. I rode the winner in that race who drew away impressively so I think with a clean break and a somewhat forward position this filly should be competitive with these horses in the race.
Race 6– CARGO SHIP
I tend to really get along with this horse. I’ve been riding him for years and he’s always been an honest horse for me. Cutting back in distance and going against open company will make my job a little harder than usual but since he’s been lagging a little going long, I’m hoping he will show me some run late in this race. There’s plenty of speed in here so I’d like to be able to sit a few lengths off of the pace and make a nice run the last 3/8s of the race and see where that puts me. He’s a pretty quick horse so I shouldn’t have any issues putting him in a stalking position
