Newmarket Horse Racing Picks
22 to 1 Tom’s Newmarket Tips and Commentary
RACE 1
British Stallion Studs EBF “Jersey Lily” Fillies’ Nursery Handicap Cl2 (2yo) 7f
9 – Geo
4 – Shining Pearl
8 – Royal Equerry
RACE 2
Juddmonte Royal Lodge Stakes (Group 2) (Colts & Geldings) Cl1 (2yo) 1m
5 – Puppet Master
We are still determining who will ride this horse (I think it will be Ryan Moore), but he won his second start, going over one mile by four lengths. In his first race, he got going later but only managed a second. With a strong effort here, could he be headed to Del Mar in a few weeks?
6 – Royal Playwright
After winning his first start by three lengths, he returned to run third in a group three race at seven furlongs and had issues initially. Many factors suggest that he’s a horse wanting to run longer distances, and her other foals had some success doing just that.
7 – Wimbledon Hawkeye
He has made three reasonable efforts but only won the novice race by a neck on the all-weather. His last two races have been in group company, and he came up short in both. All those races were at seven furlongs, so adding distance may be what this horse needs.
RACE 3
Juddmonte Cheveley Park Stakes (Group 1) (Fillies) Cl1 (2yo) 6f
5 – Lake Victoria
A winner of three in a row and won at the Curragh in a group one race. Her first three races were at seven furlongs; today, they drop her down in distance. It’s an exciting move if they are thinking of Breeder’s Cup Juvenile Sprint, but she needs to win today. Moore/O’Brien with a good, undefeated horse.
8 – Rayevka
She won her last race at six furlongs on the soft going at Chantilly. She ran well in her first race, running second by a neck on the heavy going. It is attractive to move shipping in and let’s see what happens.
6 – Leovanni
She won at Royal Ascot impressively, but her last run was not so good overall. She ran third and kept up with the leaders. This was her race at six furlongs, and I think she needs the race before putting in her best effort, which will be today.
RACE 4
Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes (Group 1) (Colts) Cl1 (2yo) 6f
7 – Shadow Of Light
He won his first two races at six furlongs and the novice and maiden levels. Stepping up to group 2, he ran a good race but did not make a solid effort, but he still ran second. Buick returns to ride, and this will be a winning effort.
8 – Whistlejacket
He’s been the favorite in all of his six starts. The last run was a reasonable effort at Deauville by three quarters of a length. He was beaten by the favorite, running in the early race. Will he run strongly again today or running in the money.
3 – Defence Minister
He’s undefeated after two starts and improved off his first start, but this is a big step up from the novice level. The last race was on the good to soft going, and he missed the start, sat fourth, and came on for the win. If he can do that today, he gets in the money run.
RACE 5
bet365 Cambridgeshire (Heritage Handicap) Cl2 (3yo+) 1m1f
37 – Poniros
He is into the race because of the going, and he likes the slow-to-heavy going. After a short break, he returned to the races and ran a strong race at Ascot in September at one and a half mile. The trainer is adding blinkers. The draw is good, but don’t expect the price to be much above 10-1.
14 – Godwinson
Lightly raced 4yo and appears to enjoy running on the soft going. He won by a head on his return to the races last out at Goodwood over the soft going. A high draw helps.
7 – Norwalk Havoc
He just missed the last time out at Galway, and I am returning from a layoff. He’s not run well on the good going, but all his races today on the soft going have been good efforts. He adds a furlong for today’s race of the last attempt. Favorable odds.
12 – Silver Sword
He showed nothing this season from his five runs. He has past efforts in group races with a placing. He had troubles in his last race, but the race before, he showed interest early and nothing late. Maybe this time?
RACE 6
Blandford Bloodstock Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (GBB Race) Cl2 (2yo) 7f
11 – Wild Angel
She ran once and finished third on the all-weather. She went wide and ran green. She needed the start. She will make a winning effort today. She should like the soft going.
3 – Digub
A nicely bred from a mare who produced a group one winner. This may be the shortest distance they will run in his career because all the foals won, going at least one-quarter-mile races and beyond. It should like the soft-going.
9 – Season Of Light
He is a first-time starter who bred and needs a race, but he has a top rider today, has been prepared for a reasonable effort, and has been transferred from Andre Fabre to Appleby.
RACE 7
Stradivarius First Foals 2024 Handicap Cl2 (3yo+ 0-105) 7f
10 – Granger Bay
8 – Mission to Moon
1 – Telemark
