22 to 1 Tom’s Sha Tin Tips and Comments
RACE 4
4 – Dubai Honour
He prepped for this on the all-weather in a listed race at Newcastle and ran second. He lost in Germany to Fantastic Moon by not much. He has one win at a distance from six tried, and that was this year at St. Cloud, and he placed in three other races. He’s beaten good horses and lost to them too. I think this may be the right spot for a strong effort.
13 – Stellenbosch
If you like “dead closers,” this horse is for you. She comes from the clouds and has raced four times this year. She won one race and ran second twice and one third in her last effort. This is only her second try at this distance. She has the outside post position, but I don’t think that matters, and a former Hong Kong jockey on board. She needs room and a bit of racing luck.
3 – Luxembourg
He is now five years old and won one race this year at Epsom, going today’s distance. After that, some okay efforts were made against good horses, including his run in the Breeder’s Cup. He ran here last year in the 2000m race and ran second. I am going to play him to run in the money today.
RACE 5
1 – Ka Ying Rising
He’s won seven races in a row, and in his ten-start career, he’s won eight and run second twice. His last race was a gem at Sha Tin, where he broke the track record and won by over three lengths. He prefers to sit and wait and then go at the end. He is one of the best sprinters in the world, and Zach Purton rides him again.
8 – Toshin Macau
After his layoff, he returned in September to win from the seventeenth post in group two and then ran a strong second, losing by a neck and finishing 1:07 behind Lugal. After those two strong efforts, he will run at the end from midpack.
2 – California Spangle
He is the speed in the race, and if he gets a lone lead, he could go all the way. But he hasn’t won since Dubai, and his last effort was not a thing of beauty, but other races were good from in-the-money finishes. He draws the two posts and will fly from the gate.
RACE 6
10 – Californiatotality
I am tossing the last race; he was boxed in and had trouble. One pace, and maybe 2000m, is too far because he’s performed well at 1600m. So, trying him at 1800m may work best. He won two starts at 1600m at the class four level and was moved up for his last start. I am betting on him to rebound with a strong effort today and hopefully stay out of trouble.
8 – Family Jewel
This horse will be running at the end with two wins and one second in his last two races. He will drop back in the distance today, and two start back at this distance but at a lower-class level. But I am looking at the last effort, running second, and a race with blocked and force-wide issues. He was in the same race as my top choice.
4 – Star Mac
He’s a later runner, had a fast pace last time out to run at, and was able to run third along the rail. He was crowded at the start of the race before but recovered to run second in a dead heat. The form is good, and he will run in the money again today.
RACE 7
12 – Jantar Mantar
This horse has always been in the money in his six starts. He won a group one last time out at Tokyo with a strong run of 1:32+, winning by two plus lengths, breaking from the sixteen post. They have tried him at long distances, but he is a miler going three for three.
14 – Ramadan
This French runner was purchased after his last race and will now be racing in Hong Kong. He has speed and pace and will be with the leaders. He won his previous race at ParisLongchamp, arriving late to arrive in time for the win. At this distance, he ran seven times and won five times. My only concern is that he still needs to win or place in a group one race.
1 – Soul Rush
He came to Sha Tin in 2023 for this race and closed strongly for fourth behind Golden Sixty. Since that race, he’s won twice and ran second once and third once behind Romantic Warrior. In form, the outside draw is usually where it has been running from. No Golden Sixty today.
RACE 8
1 – Romantic Warrior
I tried to find someone else in this race to beat him but couldn’t because he’s won in Hong Kong, Japan, and Australia and won his last six starts. He’s run twelve times at this distance and won ten times. His one fourth was at Flemington in his first start down under. He won this race last year over Luxemburg and came into this race with his second race since his layoff. He’s the favorite, and try and find someone else in this race to beat him. Here are some possibilities.
9 – Liberty Island
She ran her worst race last time, and I give that a toss, but maybe she’s not interested in running anymore. She came into that race after a layoff of seven-month layoff and went off the favorite. The winner of the race came from way back to win, and in his next start, he won the Japan Cup. She ran third in Dubai behind Rebel’s Romance and second to Equinox. If she right, she a strong contender.
4 – Tastiera
He ran second last time at Tokyo behind Do Deuce. He won his next winner in the Japan Cup. This run was coming off a layoff and had mixed racing results before. The last race was no fluke, and I will run a good one today.
Rich’s Sha Tin Ranks and Analysis
Race 4 – THE LONGINES HONG KONG VASE – 1:10 am ET
1 – Without A Fight – will be charging at the end
7 – Pradaria – won the last two 2nd up outings like today
13 – Stellenbosch – another that shows plenty in 2nd off the sidelines improvement
5 – Iresine – wanted to rank higher on 12/8 -1-1 at the distance, but comments suggest he prefers some give in the track, although good record is … good 15/7-2-3
Race 5 – THE LONGINES HONG KONG SPRINT – 1:50 am ET
1 – Ka Ying Rising – bad odds – but lifetime 10/8-2-0 and the 2nds were close
9 – Satono Reve – won his lone 3rd up – like today – and loves the distance and good 8/6-1-0
7 – Starlust – can’t overlook how fast he ran last out
12 – Helios Express – never off the board at the distance and ITM 10/11 at the track on good
Race 6 – JIM AND TONIC HANDICAP – 2:25 am ET
6 – Eighteen Carat – expecting better in 2nd up
8 – Family Jewel – a closer that should improve in the second up as well
1 – Bravehearts – moving up in class – but the form is there winning two in a row
12 – Good Luck Babe – long shot that improved enough in his last to stir up some interest at high odds
Race 7 – THE LONGINES HONG KONG MILE – 3:00 am ET
12 – Jantar Mantar – undefeated in 3 at a mile
6 – Galaxy Patch – horse runs well fresh at a mile – good 13/8-3-1
13 – Lazzat – if speed holds – not sure going a little longer helps – out front and fades late?
3 – Antino – never off the board at the distance and can run on any footing
Race 8 – THE LONGINES HONG KONG CUP – 3:40 am ET
1 – Romantic Warrior – hard to argue that he isn’t the best horse in the race
4 – Tastiera/5 Calif – there isn’t much, if any EP, in this race – I’m picking the 4 and 5 as I think they’ll be close to the pace and one stays there
9 – Liberty Island – 2nd up improvement incoming
