Parx Horse Racing Picks and Commentary

Terry “Hollywood” Hay’s Handicapping

Parx Race 10 – $300,000 GALLANT BOB STAKES GRADE II

3 –   Provocateur finished in the money in the last six races, winning three races at three different tracks. He has high % winning trainer Todd Pletcher and switches to a high % winning jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.

11 – Nakatomi has won two races in a row and is going for a hat trick and has a bullet workout on 18Sep Kee 5f ft 1:00.3 B 1/7.

4 –   Speaking has won two out of his last three races, winning the last race at Monmouth Park at today’s distance.

10 – Lightening Larry finished 5th in his last race after being bumped at the start but won a Grade 3 race at Pimlico with Chantel Sutherland in irons. Chantel Sutherland returns to ride again and knows how to win races.

Parx Race 11 – $1M COTILION STAKES GRADE I

1 –   Green Up has won four races out of her five career races, has a high % winning trainer and jockey. She has the highest last race speed rating, and her best dirt speed is fastest among today’s starters (tie).

2 –   Adare Manor ran 2nd in her last race after being fanned wide coming into the stretch, she is trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Mike Smith and should improve at the shorter distance.

6 –   Secret Oath ran 2nd in her last race at Saratoga, is a Grade 1 winner, trained by Wayne D Lukas and ridden by Luis Saez.

7 –   Shahama has won five out of seven career starts and has done well since coming in from Dubai winning her last race at Monmouth Park. She is trained by Todd Pletcher and ridden by Flavien Pratt.

Parx Race 12 – $1M PENNSYLVANIA DERBY GRADE I

1 –   Zandon has never finished out of the money in his career competing in all Graded stakes races after winning his maiden race. He has triple digit speed ratings in his last four races and is trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Joel Rosario.

8 –   Taiba ran 2nd in his last race only losing by a head, his best dirt speed is fastest among today’s starters, and he has a bullet 6F workout on Sep-17. He is trained by Bob Baffert and ridden by Mike Smith.

7 –   Tawny Port has improve in each of his last four races increasing his speed rating in each race. He has the highest last race speed rating (tie), is trained Brad Cox and has high % winning jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr.

Swiss Army Shawn’s Selections

Parx Race 10 – $300,000 GALLANT BOB STAKES GRADE II

PACE PROJECTION: There are a bunch of horses in this field that want to go for the early lead or be right off of it. I would be looking for someone to sit right off or closing from deep in this race as the pace should be fast.

#14 Scaramouch– Outside post is a concern however, there is so much speed in this race a stalking trip from the outside could be perfect. Loves Parx as he has won five of six career races there. Faces tougher but also gets a upgrade in Jockeys as Johnny V. rides him for the first time.
#9 Runningsonofagun– Has been in some tough races and still hitting the board at huge prices. Has the best late pace in this field which the race should set up for.  Has won his only career race at Parx and has won two of three at the distance.
#3 Provocateur– He has beaten some of these same horses before. He loves the distance winning three of five and has a second. Gets Irad Jr. back aboard after not having him the last two races.  Has speed but doesn’t need the lead.

Plays:  $20 win #14 $2 exbox 3,9,14 $1 tribox 3,9,14

Parx Race 11 – $1M COTILION STAKES GRADE I

PACE PROJECTION:  #9 Society will try to go to the lead from the outside post. The two inside horses also will be close to the pace the #1 Green Up and #2 Adara Manor. #6 Secret Oath will sit about mid pack before making her one big run that she always makes.

#6 Secret Oath– Gets back to the distance she really likes the 1 and 1/16 mile. She also gets a field without Nest in it who she lost to in her last two races. There’s enough pace in her for her to be able to runt them down at the end.
#1 Green Up– Is really stepping up but deserves this chance after winning 4 races in a row impressively. She started her career with a nice second and has done nothing wrong since.  Irad Ortiz Jr. is riding her again for the third time in her career.
#2 Adare Manor– Has speed but potentially might have to sit behind the #9 Society. Great connections in Mike Smith who rides her for the first time and Bob Baffert who got her back.

PLAYS: $10 exbox 1,6 $1 tribox 1,2,6

Parx Race 12 – $1M PENNSYLVANIA DERBY GRADE I

PACE PROJECTION:  #6 We the People should get the early lead while #3 B Dawk and #8 Taiba track him. It should not be all that fast of a pace.

#5 Cyberknife– This horse is in top form right now. Should be close to the pace and get a nice stalking trip here. Is two for two at this distance. His five career wins has come from four different tracks and will look to make it five by adding Parx. The only horse in the field with at least five career wins and he has crossed the wire in front six times.
#1 Zandon– Has only won two of seven career races but has hit the board in every single one. I like that Joel Rosario gets back on him for the first time since debut. There’s usually a lot of buzz with this horse as a lot of people back him. This week it seems to be a little bit quieter which could create value along with the depth of this field.
#8 Taiba– Three of his four career races he has hit triple digits for his speed number. The only one he didn’t was the Kentucky Derby. Should be close to the pace possibly stalking the potential early leader the #6 We the People.

PLAYS:  $20 win #5 $2 exbox 1,5,8

22 to 1 Tom’s Tips

Parx Race 10 – $300,000 GALLANT BOB STAKES GRADE II

11 – Nakatomi

The last run in June at CD in OC62,5k was a winning effort at 5 1/2F

Besides the Wesley Ward adventure at Royal Ascot, the horse has not been out of the money on the dirt

With only 1 race in 2022, the works are good to very good coming into this race.

He may need a race after the layoff but Wesley Ward knows what he is doing and add Joel Rosario to ride

9 – Runninsonofagun

Last race, he faced 2 very good 3yo sprinters at SAR in Jack Christopher and Gunite with problems

Claimed for $40k, he more than paid the claiming price (he was claimed for 30k the game before). Getting a Gun Runner offspring at the price is a bargain for what they are paying for his offspring now.

He won a OC50k race at Parx so we know he runs on the surface

He’s best distance maybe 6F and without those other 2 horses running here, he has a great chance

2 – Of a Revolution

Ran 2nd to CT with a interesting run 7F race, remember this is a 2 turn race

Not much in the Jersey Shore behind a few in this race

I am not sure what the best distance is for this horse, 1 turn 7F?

Add blinkers may be the trick for a winning effort or at least a placing

Parx Race 11 – $1M COTILION STAKES GRADE I

9 – Society

4 wins from 5 starts

Lost was at SAR in CCAOaks after a bad start losing to Nest and Secret Oath

She has a whole lot of speed and has won at this distance

She’s not the only speed but coming from outside post, she will make the lead

7 – Shahama

After many wins in Dubai, she shipped in for the KY Oaks

In that race, she has issues but got interested late in the race

Run a strong 2nd in the Mother Goose, she won next out at Monmouth

Steps up again in company and is a her best right now

6 – Secret Oath

She’s run 3 average races her career and then 2 good races but Nest was in both of those races

She’s faced the boys and done ok but not winning efforts

She’s the favorite and the one to beat

Parx Race 12 – $1M PENNSYLVANIA DERBY GRADE I

3 – B Dawk

Won an allowance race for NW2L at Ellis

Not much in CD race after good effort at PIM

Finally figured in out at KEE to win 7F by 11+L

It took him 4 races to crack the maiden ranks

Good works coming into the race

Westpoint Thoroughbred owned and interesting route for a Doug O’Neill

Longshot for sure but appears to be one of those late developing 3yo’s who may even be better at a 4yo

1 – Zandon

Does win enough for me to put on top, in the money in all his races

No match for Epicenter last out, but nobody was, Epicenter will be 3yo horse of the year?

Remember, his still eligible for a NW3L races

Loves to run in the money but win? Overcoming the 1 post is first order of business in the race

8 – Taiba

4 races 2 wins 1 second and the KY Derby

Better spacing in races from the Haskell to this race

Excellent works coming into the race

Tough race last out vs Cyberknife with a good duel

2nd choice for Bob Baffert and Mike Smith
