22 to 1 Tom’s Tokyo Picks and Comments
Race 7
Margot Reve – ran second in the last race in the mud at the same distance. In her last race, she had to wait for an opening because as we advanced. She’s run well in the previous couple of runs; better going and outside post position will make the difference. It’s most likely the favorite.
Ueo Muite Goran – the last two races have been reasonable efforts, with a third last time out. In that race, the winner blocks this horse for a chance to win. Lightly raced, she was strong in this field to get the win.
Diogenite – ran on for third place at the last start and first start in Tokyo. She chased from behind and improved in the straight—first time at a shorter distance. The horse initially set her own pace and didn’t lose ground. She needed the start at this distance. Went off at 25-1.
Race 9
Simhanada – is undefeated after two good races at this distance. When off the favorite last time ran in a quick 1:58.6 and finished very strongly, winning by half a length. The jockey’s comments suggest that this horse still has a bit of greenness. This is a class rise, but this horse hasn’t shown its best yet.
Lograr – raced in two group races and showed little, but he won at the allowance level at this distance. He will do much better today and move to Tokyo for the first time. Top rider.
Admire Matsuri – won the last two races after running second twice. She returns to 2000m after running 1800m. What I thought was interesting was the jockey’s comments after the race of the horse being more energetic in the race after he rode the horse in the final training session. This will carry over into this race.
Race 10
Orgoglio – is undefeated after two starts and ran 1700m last time but made that too far. He started midpack, moved to the leads, and won with ease. He returns to 1400m and should be the one to beat.
Tamamo Venator – went off the favorite last time and didn’t start well. He ran fifth, and the comment was he tried. He had a better race before running third, but the jockey felt the pace was too slow for him. With a better start, he will run back to form on his second start after the layoff.
Cafe Nix – she started well in her last race and ran on to run second on the class rise. She won her first two starts with a 4-month break between those races. She’s a mid-pack runner who must sit with cover and see what opens up to make her run.
Race 11
Octavianus – an ultra-consist horse who won his last race in February. He’s been in the money in every race of his career and ran second last year in this race after a layoff. He comes into this race fresh and will win today from off the pace.
Escobar is not the best starter, but it does finish well enough. if he gets off to a good start, he could win. He raced two times in November, running tenth last time out at 2000m and fifth going 1800m the time before. Based on the comments from the previous race, he will significantly improve today, and that’s what I am betting on.
Elkai McEnroe’s – last four races had been average at best, but he appears to be improving from the previous race. This is his third race after a break, and he moves well at the end. He should sit up with the leaders and see if I am correct in saying he’s coming to form.
Race 12
1 – Goliath – he won his last two races, beating Hamish at ParisLongchamp and beating Bluestocking at Ascot. Bluestocking went on and won the ARC. He won running on all types of running, from very soft to firm. He should be ready to make a big effort today and get a good start.
3 – Do Deuce – won his last race despite a slow pace. He closed from the back of the field and ran the final three furlongs in 32.5. in 2023, after being beaten by Equinox twice, he found the winner’s circle in December. The race at Meydan was ok, coming on late, but that was only an 1800m race. The June race was forgettable. Off the last effort off the layoff at 2000m, he is ready for a strong effort.
6 – Cervinia – she ran six times and won four, finished second once, and ran eighteenth in a race in April. Last time, she showed a strong effort, beating the Bond Girl from midpack. She won the Japan Oaks at this distance and today takes on the males for the first time. Off the last effort, closing strongly she could win it all.
